As a freelance writer, I’ve covered topics from pet tortoises to pot lawyers. These days, my main interests include the history of my Dutch-American family in the Hudson Valley, books, travel, food, health, and the law, most often for the Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine. From 2011 to 2014 I lived in Beijing, where I wrote about a wide range of topics for the Wall Street Journal, Atlantic’s CityLab, the Christian Science Monitor, and the Washington Post. In China, I covered issues that include Beijing’s new baijiu bar, the coal industry, Chinese lawyers fighting wrongful criminal convictions, and a new variety of beer called the “Airpocalypse” that mocked Beijing’s notoriously polluted air.
